6 Signs Your AC is on the Fritz

With summer fast approaching, it’s more important than ever to ensure your air conditioning system is working optimally. You don’t want to be without it on the hottest days of the year. There are many situations that can signal the need for possible repair or replacement of your AC unit. Here are the most common ones.

1.    Hot Air

If you turn on your air conditioner and instead of refreshing cool air, you get a blast of hot air; this could be due to the misalignment of key parts or worn-out components. Low refrigerant levels could also be to blame.

2.    Compromised Airflow

If the airflow coming out of the vents is weak rather than steady and strong, the problem could lie with the vents themselves or the AC’s compressor. Other culprits could include a clogged air filter, leaking ducts, blocked vents, fan problems, low refrigerant level, or accumulation of debris around the outdoor unit. Clean off the outdoor unit to see if that helps.

3.    Constant Cycling

If your unit is constantly kicking on and off, a dirty air filter may be to blame. The culprit could also be an improperly-calibrated thermostat, ductwork issues, or a faulty compressor clutch. Whatever the case, constant cycling is never a good thing, as it increases your energy bills and places extra stress on your AC unit.

4.    Strange Noises

If your AC is making weird sounds such as clicking, banging, buzzing, whining, clunking, or shuttering, there are any number of things that could be to blame. The most common could be loose parts, refrigerant leaks, missing or broken isolation feet, or a malfunctioning compressor.

5.    Leaks

Leaks are never a good sign, so don’t ignore them if you spot them in and around the unit. This usually indicates a refrigerant issue, which poses both a health and environmental risk. Another reason for leaks is that the drain line is blocked or broken.

6.    Unpleasant Odors

If you detect a musty smell coming from the AC, this could be a signal that mold or mildew is growing inside the system. If it’s more like a burning smell, this could indicate a burned-out electrical component. If you detect a chemical smell, this could signal a dangerous chemical leak. In any case, prompt inspection by an HVAC technician in Harper Woods is imperative.
